Hello! My name is Clara. I’m a documentary filmmaker based in Morgantown, West Virginia. I’ve been working in media production since 2019, honing my skills in as a director, cinematographer and editor along the way. I’ve worked for organizations like Smithsonian Folklife, West Virginia Public Broadcasting and More Perfect Union and on films like KING COAL, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

I was a 2024-2025 Fulbright Scholar based in Amman, Jordan and I speak Spanish and Arabic. I graduated from West Virginia University in 2019 where I studied International Relations and World Languages.

I work with a team of trusted collaborators that are based in and around Appalachia, the U.S. and internationally. I regularly pull in folks from this network to tap into their expertise, ultimately elevating the project’s quality and impact.

about the team

In Irish mythology, the hazel tree is a symbol of wisdom, creativity, and growth. In our work we strive to embody those principles — always learning, creating and striving for improvement. And as a bonus, it’s also derived from the surname “Haizlett,” meaning “one who dwelt at the edge of the Hazelwood.”
